The Nevada lemon law in detail

Nevada’s lemon law, sections 597.600 to 597.688 of the Nevada Revised Statutes, protects a new motor vehicle during the warranty term or the first year after delivery, whichever ends first. The chapter presumes a reasonable number of attempts after four repairs of the same defect, or after 30 calendar days out of service in that period. The owner must notify the manufacturer in writing before the warranty ends or within a year of delivery, whichever is earlier, and a manufacturer dispute procedure that qualifies must be used first. A lawsuit must be filed within 18 months of the original delivery. Motor homes and off-road vehicles are outside the law, while a buyer who receives the car during the warranty is inside it. We read chapter 597 in an archived copy of June 13, 2026, because the legislature’s site could not be opened directly on the day of reading.

The Nevada notice comes first

In Nevada the written notice has to reach the manufacturer inside the protection period itself. An owner who waits for the fourth attempt in month thirteen may already be too late. Writing after the second failed repair costs nothing and keeps the claim within reach.

The 18-month limit is counted from delivery, which leaves six months after the first year to go to court. Using a dispute procedure takes part of that time, so start it early.

The chapter allows a deduction for use without giving a formula, and the buyback calculator shows an example for that reason. Owners who also have a claim under the warranty itself can rely on the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, whose remedies are separate from the state law.

Questions people ask

How many repair attempts make a car a lemon in Nevada?

The Nevada presumption starts at 4 attempts on the same defect, or 30 calendar days out of service in total, within 1 year or the warranty term, whichever ends first. Meeting a test creates a presumption, which the manufacturer can still contest before the program or the court. Count each visit with its repair order, and keep every order with its dates.

Does the Nevada lemon law cover used or leased cars?

New motor vehicles. Not motor homes or off-road vehicles. Used cars: Only a buyer to whom the car is transferred during the warranty. A used car sold with the rest of the manufacturer’s warranty still carries that warranty, which federal law enforces even where the state lemon law stops. Leases are covered where the text names lessees.

Must I go through arbitration before suing under the Nevada lemon law?

A manufacturer dispute procedure must be used first when it qualifies (NRS 597.620). Time limit: Lawsuit within 18 months of the original delivery. Under the federal rule, 16 CFR Part 703, a manufacturer program that a warranty requires you to use first must decide within 40 days, and its decision does not bind you if you go to court afterwards. The warranty booklet names any program the manufacturer offers.
